On 20 April 1233, Floris IV, Count of Holland, sold an area of wild peat along the Gouwe to Nicolaas van Gnepwijk, Herbaren van Aalsmeer and Woubrecht for 200 Dutch pounds. The area was given the name 'Waddinxvene'.
What is now Waddinxveen used to be three centers: Noord-Waddinxveen, (municipality of Noord-Waddinxveen) located on the Dorpstraat, Zuid-Waddinxveen (municipality of Zuid-Waddinxveen) located near the bridge church and the lift bridge, and Zuid Gouwekade (municipality of Broek, Thuil and 't Weegje) located near the Sint Victor parish on the Zuidkade. Based on the different concentrations of old buildings, it can still be seen that it was originally three separate cores.
